Henry Sinclair Horne, Baron Horne (1861-1929), General

Born at Stirkoke and educated at Harrow School and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich; received a commission in the Royal Artillery and promoted captain in 1888; promoted major in 1898 and joined the cavalry division at Cape Colony on the outbreak of the South African War in 1899; took part in numerous operations during this war, including the relief of Kimerley and the battle of Diamond Hill; went to France as brigadier-general commanding the Royal Artillery under Sir Douglas Haig on the outbreak of the First World War; for his services in this war he was raised to the peerage as Baron Horne of Stirkoke and received the thanks of both houses of parliament; in 1920 he was appointed aide-de-camp general to George V, but retired from the army in 1926 and went on to interest himself actively in service charities; died suddenly while shooting on his estate in 1929.
