Arabic scholar; made voyages up the Nile, 1826 and 1827; studied people of Cairo, 1833-5; adopted dress of Egypt; published famous Account of the Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians, 1836; travelled again in Egypt and published several works; acknowledged as one of the leading Arabic scholars in Europe.
