Statesman; MP from 1803; chancellor of the exchequer, 1806; succeeded to the title, 1809; supported abolition of slave trade and other liberal measures; served in various whig ministries, 1830-41; president of the council, 1846-52, and in the cabinet, without office, 1852-63.
