Mid-Georgian Portraits Catalogue

Charles Jenkinson, 1st Earl of Liverpool (1729-1808), Statesman

Statesman; private secretary to Lord Bute 1761-63; lord of the Treasury 1767-73, president of the board of trade 1786-1804; FRS 1794; created Baron Hawkesbury 1780 and Earl of Liverpool 1796.

‘He was above the common height, but his lank limbs and figure were destitute of elegance or of grace. The expression of his countenance was not destitute of deep intelligence. Reflection and caution seemed to be stamped on every feature, while his eyes were usually, even in conversation, directed towards the earth’ (Sir Nathaniel Wraxall, 1815).

‘pleasant in his voice and manner, though eminently ugly, long, and lean, with strange sort of eyes, oddly thrown up or cast down, but never looking like the eyes of any other man’ (Mrs Hester Piozzi).
