Profligate of contradictory temper; in Italy 1763-65 and 1769-71; MP 1768-69; succeeded as 2nd Baron Lyttelton 1773; it was alleged that a dream warned him three days in advance of his sudden, early death - ‘it is the ghost story, after all, which makes his lineaments worth preserving in the National Portrait Gallery’ (Westminster Gaz., 1900).
