Early Georgian Portraits Catalogue

James Macardell (1727 or 1728-1765), Mezzotint engraver

Apart from the self-portrait drawing, the only indisputable portrait of the sitter, there is a half length by Marcellus Laroon the younger which is stated to be signed and dated 175(4?) and inscribed James Maca ... on the back. [1] It was with the Sabin Galleries, 'English Portraits Mainly Eighteenth Century', 1960 (9). Considering the few years supposedly separating the two portraits, the sitter looks remarkably young in the latter, even allowing for the difference in treatment.

1) R. Raines, Marcellus Laroon, 1966, p 111, and pl.48.
