Novelist; author of The Man of Feeling, 1771, essayist, editor of The Mirror, and an early Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

'In person he was thin, shrivelled and yellow, kiln-dried, with something when seen in profile of the clever wicked look of Voltaire' (Lord Cockburn, Memorials of His Time).
