Mid-Georgian Portraits Catalogue

William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield (1705-1793), Judge

Judge; KC and solicitor general 1742; attorney-general 1754 and lord chief justice 1756-88; an outstanding advocate who defined much of English commercial law; created Baron Mansfield 1756, Earl of Mansfield 1776; d. at Kenwood, which he had bought in 1754.

[in 1777] ‘the roses and lilies had not yet forsook his cheeks; and the lustre of his complexion was augmented by means of eyes that seemed to sparkle with genius. His person, if somewhat below the exact standard of beauty, was yet exquisitely formed; his motions were graceful; his dress neat, becoming, and appropriate’ (Alexander Stephens, 1813).
