Exhibited RA 1778 (247); Second special exhibition of National Portraits (William and Mary to MDCCC), South Kensington, 1867 (717). Engraved J. R. Smith 1778; S. W. Reynolds (and in reduced form by C. T. Warren 1792, J. Hopwood 1807). A studio version at Bishopthorpe Palace and copies at Powderham Castle and Christ Church, Oxford.

Painting by George Romney, three-quarter length in private dress. Christie’s, 16 July 1982, lot 63. Sittings took place between May 1790 and April 1794 (H. Ward & W. Roberts, Romney, A Biographical and Critical Essay with a Catalogue Rainsonné of his Works, 1904, II, p 100). Engraved J. Ward 1800. A replica was in Romney’s sale, 27 April 1807, lot 31.

Heath 1807-10 (he exhibited a plate after Hoppner RA 1830, no.983, and see C. Baker, British Art Jnl., II, 2001, pp 36-38). Copies at Westminster School, Bishop’s House at Chester, and Scone Palace. Miniature by William Grimaldi with the Markham family in 1913 (Rev. A. Grimaldi, A Catalogue of Paintings, Drawings & Engravings by and after William Grimaldi, 1873, nos.326-28); two enamel copies by Henry Bone, one exhibited RA 1800 (896), another in the Royal Collection (R. Bust by John Bacon jr., with wig and bands. Christ Church, Oxford (Mrs R. L. Poole, Catalogue of Portraits in the possession of the University, Colleges and City and County of Oxford, III, p 79). Exhibited RA 1804 (939). Another dated 1813 at Windsor Castle (illus. Connoisseur, CXXXII, 1953, p 118; R. Gunnis, Dictionary of British Sculptors, 1968 ed., f.p.16). Examples were with the Markham descendants and at Kenwood in 1913; a plaster is in York Minster Library.

Minor images include: a crude anon. bust-length circular engraving 1783 (accurately drawn from an original picture; New Christian Mag.); and two caricatures, by Burnet 1782 A Bp Laud charging his Clergy (head taken from the later Reynolds; M. D. George, British Museum, Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires, V, 5958), and anon., An Arch Prelate in Boots or The Church Militant 1778, whole length with shield and sword marked Yorks Sermons.
