Courtier, amateur architect, member of the Kit-Cat Club; sty. Lord Monthermer 1702-09; succeeded as 2nd Duke of Montagu 1709; served in Flanders 1706; FRS 1718; KG 1718; FSA 1725; KB and Grand Master 1725; master general of the ordnance 1740-41 and 1742-d.; married 1705 Mary, youngest daughter and co-heir of the 1st Duke of Marlborough; known for his benevolence.
