Naval officer; lieutenant 1762 and captain 1765; MP 1768-74, 1776-90; FRS 1771; led an expedition to the Arctic 1773; succeeded as 2nd Baron Mulgrave [I] 1775; lord of the Admiralty 1777-82; served in the Channel during the American war; joint paymaster-general of the forces 1784-90; cr. Baron Mulgrave [GB] 1790.
‘as he was formed on rather a heavy colossal scale, the Opposition, to distinguish him from his [brother Charles, also an MP] denominated him ‘Ursa Major’’ (Sir Nathaniel Wraxall, 1815).
