Mid-Georgian Portraits Catalogue

Horatio ('Horace') Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (1717-1797), Writer and collector

Virtuoso, 4th son of the prime minister Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford; published Anecdotes of Painting in England 1762-71; succeeded his nephew as 4th Earl 1791.

'His figure was ... not merely tall, but more properly long and slender to excess; his complexion and particularly his hands, of a most unhealthy paleness. I speak of him before the year 1772. His eyes were remarkably bright and penetrating, very dark and lively: - his voice was not strong, but his tones extremely pleasant ... ' (Laetitia-Matilda Hawkins, 1822).
