Born in London; entered the Royal Navy in 1874 as a cadet and passed out in 1876; he rose through the ranks, promoted to lieutenant in 1883, captain in 1903 and Rear-Admiral by 1914; he was given command of the 3rd Cruiser Squadron in 1915 and was Commander-in-Chief of the Battle Cruiser Fleet during the Battle of Jutland; he remained in this post until the end of the war; having been promoted to Vice-Admiral in 1918, Pakenham subsequently served as President of the Royal Naval College from 1919-20 and then as Commander-in-Chief in the North Atlantic and West Indies; he was appointed Admiral in 1922 and retired in 1926; died in 1933.
