Later Stuart Portraits Catalogue

Charles Mordaunt, 3rd Earl of Peterborough (1658-1735), Soldier

c.1675
In 1761 Horace Walpole saw at Drayton House, once a seat of the Mordaunt family, ‘a most genteel head, with great spirit looking over his shoulder … when young & very handsome. He has dark brown hair very thick & flowing, a rich habit embroidered, & a dark blue neck cloth’ (Wal. Soc., XVI, 1928, p 56). This description identifies the unattributed portrait exhibited Second Special Exhibition of National Portraits ( ... William and Mary to MDCCC), South Kensington, 1867, no.100, lent W. P. Stopford (later Stopford-Sackville who married the granddaughter of Victoria Sackville of Drayton House).

H. B. Portman), Miniatures at Devonshire House (Devonshire)’, Sussex Archaeological Society, Collections, XLVII, 1904, p 26, no.39; W. Painting attributed to Charles Jervas, whole-length, baton in right hand, pointing with left to ships at sea, ordnance at his feet. Burghley House (357), from William Stephen Poyntz of Midgham. Has also been attributed to J. B. Van Loo. A copy at Eversley Manor in 1943 (illus. Country Life, XCIII, 1943, p 530, where whimsically given to Amiconi).
A whole-length in Garter robes was listed at Gordon Castle in 1796 (Sir William Musgrave, MS lists of portraits, British Museum, Add. MSS 6392, f.66, no.14); Gordon Castle sale, 3rd day, 31 August 1938, lot 1277, with another half-length of Peterborough, lot 1241.

Doubtful Portraits
Peterborough and his mistress, the actress Anastasia Robinson, tentatively identified in A Musical Assembly, 1715-20, by Marcellus Laroon II, formerly in the collection of the Princess Marina (R. Raines, Laroon, 1967, pp 76-77, 113, no.10, pl.3).

The ivory bust by David Le Marchand (C. Avery, David le Marchand 1674-1726, 1996, no.30) seems too heavy-featured to be the ‘well shaped thin man’ described by Macky, or the ‘skeleton in outward figure’ described by Swift (when Peterborough was sixty).

Painting after Dahl, half-length in painted oval, wearing armour; exhibited Lady Suffolk and her Friends, Marble Hill, 1966, no.18 lent Capt.Wolridge Gordon.

Exhibited Second Special Exhibition of National Portraits ( ... William and Mary to MDCCC), South Kensington, 1867, no.129 lent Viscount Boyne, three-quarter-length to right, pointing with sword to a distant naval engagement.

Small painting on copper ascribed to Nazari, bust-length oval. Althorp, from G. Barker (Sir George Scharf’s Trustees’ Sketch Books, 11:15 sketch of 1866; K. J. Garlick, ‘A Catalogue of Pictures at Althorp’, Wal. Soc., XLV, 1976, no.472).
