Miscellaneous writer and close friend of Dr Johnson; b. Bachycraig, Flintshire, married 1) 1763 the brewer Henry Thrale (d. 1781), 2) 1784 Gabriel Piozzi (see NPG 1152).

'less than five feet in height, plump and deep-chested, with large muscular hands ... her eyes were fine and expressive, light grey in colour; her hair was chestnut brown' (J. L. Clifford, 1952).
