Jane Porter (1776-1850), Novelist; sister of Anna Maria Porter

Novelist, author of Thaddeus of Warsaw, 1803, The Scottish Chiefs, 1810 and others. Sister of Sir Robert Ker Porter and Anna Maria.

Miss Mitford admired her 'brilliant colouring' but in 1835 Lady Morgan pronounced her 'tall lank lean and lackadaisical a regular Melpomene' (Memoirs, II, p 396).

Charles MacFarlane writing many years after their deaths said 'I liked these two sisters exceedingly, although they were authoresses … They were quiet, perfectly unaffected, rather retiring, very ladylike elderly ladies, neat and plain in their attire, and taking no pains to conceal the snow which Time was throwing on their hair' (Reminiscences of a Literary Life, 1917, p 113).
