Architect; appointed surveyor to Salisbury Cathedral and clerk of the works to the dean and chapter, 1734; [1] published The British Carpenter, long the best textbook on the subject, 1733, and a second edition, 1735, containing a supplement Palladio’s Orders of Architecture ...; other editions published 1753, 1759, 1765; his Series of ... Observations on Salisbury Cathedral, 1753, was source material for many subsequent works.
