Oil by Shee in Scottish NPG, three-quarter-length seated with a view of Lancaster Canal Lune aqueduct in background, exhibited RA 1794 (2) and acquired from the Rennie family in 1980.

Oil by Raeburn given by his son Sir John to Institution of Civil Engineers in 1849, sold in 1950 and possibly that at Sotheby's 22 November 1961 (95) bought Fine Art Society; another was exhibited Third Exhibition of National Portraits, South Kensington, 1868 (103) lent by W. H. Rennie, and another in Raeburn Exhibition 1876 (152) lent by Raeburn family. Greig mentions one sold at Christie's 1903.

Lawrence was going to paint his portrait (but died before doing so) and said: 'I shall show him as Jupiter for there never was a more magnificent head' (Sir John Rennie cit. Cyril Boucher, John Rennie, 1963, pp 22-3).
