Sir William Blake Richmond (1842-1921), Painter; son of George Richmond
One trait in Richmond’s character which I liked, but which was not popular, apparently, with everyone, was that he took a boyish delight, half unconscious, in playing a part – sometimes the devout ascetic, spending weeks in a mountain monastery with holy friars and religious exercises, or as the devil-may-care swashbuckler and braggart, at other times the humble and devoted student of Art, or the purely pagan Platonist, rejoicing in all the pleasures of the world.
His appearance in the 1880s:
With a boyish, hearty manner, long fairish hair parted in the middle and silky beard and moustache, a rather décolleté collar and flowing necktie, he was quite ‘in the picture’ as host at his rambling old house and studio.
