Statesman; succeeded as 3rd Duke 1750; FRS 1755; opened an artists’ academy in Richmond House, Whitehall 1758 (under the direction of Cipriani and Wilton); served in Germany during the Seven Years War; general 1782, field-marshal 1792; ambassador in Paris 1765; KG 1782; master-general of the Ordnance 1782-95; member of Pitt’s cabinet 1784; Wraxall commended his application which compensated for a limited range of ideas.
