Rear-admiral and explorer; entered navy, 1812; accompanied Sir William Parry on various voyages of exploration in the 1820s; discovered magnetic pole on expedition with Felix Booth, 1831; commanded expedition for geographical discovery in the Antarctic, 1839-43; led expedition in search of Sir John Franklin, 1848-9.
