Sir Andrew Hamilton Russell (1868-1960), Major-General

Born in New Zealand but educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst from 1886; joined the 1st battalion, the Border regiment, in 1887; spent much of the period between 1888 and 1892 serving in India before resigning his commission and returning to New Zealand; took over management of his father’s properties in 1896 and acquired all of his assets in New Zealand by 1910; alongside this he held rank of major in the New Zealand volunteer force from 1909; commanded the New Zealand mounted rifles brigade from outbreak of First World War until 1919; appointed CB and KCB during this time; president of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association for all but two of the years between 1921 and 1935; during the Second World War he served on the war council, was an inspector-general and acting chief of the general staff; died of heart failure at Tunanui in November 1960.
