James Sadler (1753-1828), Aeronaut

Portrait by James Roberts (also an Oxford man), known from Edmund Scott's stipple published 2 May 1785 and dedicated to the Chancellor and officials of Oxford University, shows him as 'The first English Aerostatist', painted shortly after his ascent from Oxford in a hot air balloon 4 October 1784.

Several magnificent coloured aquatints illustrate his ballooning exploits between 1810 and 1813 - his ascent from Oxford and his dramatic escape from drowning in the Bristol Channel in 1810, his crossing the Irish Sea from Dublin in 1812, and, from a drawing by Bonington, his flight from Nottingham in 1813 (see J. E. Hodgson, 'Early Aeronautical Prints' in Connoisseur, XCVI, 1935, p 23 in colour, and L. T. C. Rolt, The Aeronauts, 1966, p 128).
