Painting attributed to Bernard Lens I, half-length, dark hair, wearing black gown, holding an open book before him inscribed in Hebrew ‘48, 49 Psalms 20, 21’ (Psalms 20 and 21 were used in the service of 4 February 1649 following the execution of Charles I); a black and gold mourning ring on the third finger of his right hand. Emmanuel College, Cambridge, from Gawdy Hall, Norf., home of Sancroft’s descendants (illus. Prince Frederick Duleep Singh, Portraits in Norfolk Houses, I, p 164, no.21; Stubbings 1988, ad vocem); the contemporary frame inscribed with Sancroft’s motto (rapido contrarius orbi). A watercolour copy in the University Library, Cambridge (J. W. Goodison, Cambridge Portraits, I, 1955, p 38, no.42).

Painting by Peter Paul Lens, whole-length seated, the head taken from the Loggan of 1680, right hand on upright book in his lap, inscribed and dated. Emmanuel College, Cambridge, commissioned 1754 (J. Ingamells, The English Episcopal Portrait 1559-1835, catalogue, 1981, p 342; Stubbings 1988, ad vocem). A three-quarter-length copy at Lambeth Palace was commissioned by Abp. Cornwallis 1768-83 (J. Ingamells, The English Episcopal Portrait 1559-1835, catalogue, 1981, p 343). A bust-length miniature version by Peter Paul Lens, signed and dated 1758, sold Christie’s, 9 April 1991, lot 39.
