James Sant (1820-1916), Painter

Portrait and genre painter; born 23 April 1820, in Croydon, Surrey, brother of landscapist George Sant. Trained with John Varley and Augustus Wall Callcott, and at Royal Academy Schools; exhibited RA 1840–1915, and at Grosvenor Gallery; known especially for popular images of childhood, in 1860s he also became a fashionable portraitist, having particular success with images of royal children (see also those of Adelina Patti, NPG 3625, and Archbishop Tait, NPG 4580); elected ARA 1861, RA 1869; painter to Queen Victoria 1871; CVO 1914; died 12 July 1916 in London.
