Botanist, of Canwick Hall, Lincs.; as Sherardian Professor of Botany at Oxford from 1747 he delivered one indifferent public lecture; a correspondent of Linnaeus who dedicated to him the genus Sibthorpia; FRS 1788; his son John (see R. J. B. Walker National Portrait Gallery, Regency Portraits, 1985) was a more eminent botanist.
