Sir Harry Smith, Bt (1787-1860), General

Colonial soldier and governor; served in Napoleonic wars; in the Kaffir war, 1835-6; adjutant-general in India, 1840; fought in Gwalior campaign; defeated the Sikhs at Aliwal; created baronet and major-general, 1846; governor of the Cape of Good Hope, 1847; suppressed Boers, 1848, and Kaffirs, 1850-2; prevented convicts being landed; lieutenant-general, 1854; four towns in South Africa named in his honour.
