John Hanning Speke (1827-1864), Explorer in Africa

African explorer; army officer in India, 1844-54; explored Somaliland and central Africa, with Sir Richard Burton, discovering Lake Tanganyika, and, independently, Victoria Nyanza; with J. A. Grant, proved the latter to be the source of the Nile; Speke and Grant were the first to cross equatorial Africa.
