Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl Stanhope (1753-1816), Scientist and politician; MP for Wycombe

Whig MP 1780-6, frequently satirised in the popular prints as 'Citizen Stanhope' because of his democratic principles; his scientific inventions included a steamship (the Kent), calculating machines, a microscopic lens and the 'Stanhope Press'; styled Viscount Mahon 1763-86.

'He was tall, lank, with a polished forehead which on account of baldness extended to the occiput' (Complete Peerage, XXXI, i, 235).
