Historian; MP from 1830; under-secretary for foreign affairs, 1834-5; FSA, 1841, and president from 1846; secured extension of copyright, and foundation of the NPG; first chairman of NPG trustees from 1857; lord rector of Aberdeen, 1858; a founder of the Historical Manuscripts Commission; a prolific historian, working chiefly on the 18th century.
