Sir George Leonard Staunton, 1st Bt (1737-1801), Diplomat

Diplomat; MD Montpellier 1758; practised in the West Indies 1762-70 and 1772-79, where he met George Macartney, becoming his aide-de-camp 1779; secretary to Macartney at Madras 1782-84, successfully negotiating with the French and Tipu Sultan in Mysore; Bt [I] 1785; FRS 1787 and honorary DCL Oxford 1790; minister plenipotentiary with Macartney in China 1792-96, accompanied by his son (Sir George Thomas Staunton, 1781-1859); published an account of the mission in 1797.
