Hymnologist and calvinist who long maintained a bad-tempered public controversy with John Wesley; ordained 1762, vicar of Broad Hembury, Devon, from 1768; his books included Poems on Sacred Subjects 1759 and he is perhaps still remembered for the hymn Rock of Ages, composed in 1775; editor of the Gospel Magazine 1775-76.
