Prelate, of a royalist military family; Christ Church, Oxford; BA 1672, MA 1675; succeeded as 3rd Bt. 1681; DD 1685; mobilized Cornish militia against Monmouth 1685 (which led to his being described as a ‘spiritual Dragoon’); Bishop of Bristol 1685-88; one of the Seven Bishops 1688; Bishop of Exeter 1688-1707 and Prelate of the Garter and Bishop of Winchester 1707-21.
