Daughter of the Duke of Kent, and granddaughter of George III; succeeded to the throne, 1837; married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha, 1840; influenced to a considerable extent the foreign and home policies of successive governments, and the attitudes and manners of her people; her reign, the longest in British history, saw the consolidation of the Empire, the expansion of industry and commerce, numerous reforms, and the beginnings of state education and social welfare.
