Governor-General of India 1797-1805, Foreign Secretary 1809-12, Viceroy of Ireland 1821-8 and 1833-4. He was eldest son of the Earl of Mornington and brother of the Duke of Wellington, styled Viscount Wellesley until 1781, Earl of Mornington until 1799, and Marquess Wellesley thereafter.
