Author and Whig politician; Inner Temple 1708, called to the Bar 1714; KC 1717; counsel to the Board of Trade 1724; MP 1721-22, 1722-26; lord chancellor of Ireland 1725-26; a prominent Whig pamphleteer from 1716, in 1726 he published a tragedy, Hecuba, indifferently received in Drury Lane; he died suddenly of a fever; ‘a man of brilliant talents, of which he had given proof by a phenomenally rapid rise in his profession’ (F. E. Ball).
