Explorer and Egyptologist; resided in Egypt, 1821-33, exploring and excavating; completed Survey of Thebes, 1830; his Survey of Egypt, 1835, became a standard work; knighted, 1839; account of his travels in Balkans published 1848; wrote on English antiquities, and aesthetics.
