Richard Wilson (1714-1782), Landscape painter

Painting by A. R. Mengs, half length, painting at his easel, see NPG 1803. National Museum and Gallery, Cardiff (illus. Mengs, Kenwood, 1993, no.18; S. Roettgen, Mengs, 1999, no.236). Painted in Rome in exchange for a landscape by Wilson. Engraved W. Bromley 1789, 1790; W. Bond 1812 (From a portrait copied by John Taylor under the inspection of Wilson, after an original Picture by Raphael Mengs, in the possession of Sir W. W. Wynne; see Joseph Farington, Diary, 21 June 1813) and 1824; C. Pye 1822. A copy by William Roos 1846 was offered to the NPG 1871 (Sir George Scharf's Trustees' Sketch Books, 17/79); see also NPG 1305 and NPG 1803.

Painting by Johann Zoffany, The Academicians of the Royal Academy, see NPG 1437. A pot of porter by his side was painted out after Wilson threatened Zoffany with a thrashing (W. G. Constable, Richard Wilson, 1953, p 57).
