Mid-Georgian Portraits Catalogue

Robert Bakewell (1725-1795), Stock-breeder

Stock-breeder; succeeded in 1760 to his father’s farm at Dishley Grange, Leicestershire, where he produced new breeds of sheep, oxen and black horses, and experimented with the feeding and housing of stock.

‘In person, Mr B. was tall, broad set, and, in his later years, rather inclined to corpulency. His countenance bespoke intelligence, activity, and a high degree of benevolence’ (Gentleman's Magazine, 1795).
