Philanthropist and industrialist; pioneer of the Glasgow cotton trade, he built mills at New Lanark, initially in partnership with Richard Arkwright; a benevolent administrator and a preacher in the free church which he founded.
‘In person, Mr Dale was short and corpulent ... He was of a cheerful temperament, of easy access, lively and communicative; and, when in company of friends, he freely relaxed all formal restraints’ (Andrew Liddell, 1855).
