Prelate; 2nd son of 1st Earl of Guilford, half brother of the prime minister Lord North (2nd Earl Guilford), by whom he was much favoured; fellow of All Souls 1763; canon of Christ Church 1770; Dean of Canterbury 1770-71; Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield 1771, Worcester 1774, and Winchester 1781 (and prelate of the Garter); restored Farnham Castle; ‘possessed of much higher abilities than has generally been supposed; which might, perhaps, be owing to his deafness’ (Gentleman's Magazine, 1820).
