Historian; Master of Dulwich College and constant companion and friend of Lord Holland and the Holland House circle.
'He was a stout strong man, with a very large head, broad face, enormous round silver spectacles on his nose, and with the thickest legs I ever remember. His accent Scotch, his manner eager but extremely good-natured …’ (General Charles Fox remembering Allen as he was in 1802, cited in llchester, The House of the Hollands, 1937, p 179).
