Later Stuart Portraits Catalogue

Egbert van Heemskerck the Elder (circa 1635-1704), Artist

Painter; b. Haarlem; in Amsterdam, The Hague and Haarlem 1661-69; probably came to England in the early 1670s, Vertue noticing a picture by him at Wootton in 1674; d. London; according to Buckeridge his ‘gross and comical genius’ succeeded for a long while in England among ‘waggish collectors’, but he fell short of his predecessors Brouwer and Teniers ‘in the study of the sots paradice’. There is some confusion of his work with that of his son, Egbert van Heemskerck the younger (c.1676-1744).
