Adapted from the French blouse dress of 1822, the front of the bodice was gathered in at the centre of the waist and over the shoulders to produce a pouching effect, the neck round and half-high, the back gathered in the middle and fastened by strings. Worn for morning dress circa 1823-1828 and probably similar to corsages à la vierge and en peignoir. While French fashion plates appear to show separate blouses and skirts in the mid-20s, or joined bodice and skirt of different fabrics, this does not seem to have been adopted in Britain at the time.
