Openwork fabric of linen, cotton, silk, woollen or metal threads, from the 16th century onwards. Bobbin lace or pillow lace were made on a pillow by twisting and plaiting threads attached to bobbins, and needle or point lace was created by using a needle and thread and variations on buttonhole stitch. Huge quantities of machine-made lace of all sorts were being made from the mid 19th century.
