Two or even three skirts of varying lengths and fabrics, common for summer and evening wear in the mid 1840s. Double skirts were also worn in the second half of the 1860s when they were often referred to as the upper and under skirts or dresses, and the upper skirt was generally looped up at the sides and later bunched out behind.
