A day bodice inspired by the red shirts worn by the Italian general, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-82) who visited England in 1863. In 1861 it was a loose front-fastening bodice of red cashmere with bands on the shoulder, but white cambric versions later appeared. It was made loose and falling over the waistband or confined with narrow tucks from neck to waist, worn with or without a jacket; 1860s.
