From the 1820s and 30s, light, high-waisted frocks were replaced by more structured dresses with shorter, fuller skirts which followed women's fashions except in their length, and might also have shorter sleeves and lower necklines. Length graduated according to age, skirts reaching to just below the knee for a girl of 5 to 8, to just clearing the ankle at 12 or 13. The blouse and skirt, worn informally by women in the 1860s, was popular for girls from this time.
