The relationship between Great Britain and Ireland underwent a number of changes while Gillray was publishing his prints. In 1782 the Irish parliament gained legislative independence through the establishment of a new constitution. Irish gratitude (D12307) is a fairly gentle satire recording the Irish government’s gift of £50,000 to Henry Grattan for his role in securing this development. The print was published a fortnight after the event. In 1798 a political organisation called the United Irishmen led an unsuccessful rebellion. The result was the dissolution of the Irish parliament and the 1800 Act of Union, establishing the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
