Gillray frequently deployed images of demons to communicate his ideas. In Coalition dance (NPG 12334) for example, the uneasy members of a political coalition dance to the tune of a small impish demon; in The gout (NPG 12692) a demon is used in a far more direct way to symbolise the extreme pain caused by the medical condition which was often the subject of eighteenth century humour.
